Thompson-Spires was drawn to the exercise of updating Smith’s 19th century glimpses of black citizenship to our contemporary times, but found the actual process of “hold on to his framework” limiting. Adopting the pseudonym “Communipaw,” Smith’s sketches appeared in Frederick Douglass’s Paper under the title “Heads of the Colored People Done with a Whitewashed Brush,” and featured washerwomen, news vendors, and gravediggers. In her author’s note, Nafissa Thompson-Spires explains that the initial spark for her debut collection came out of a desire “to write back” to the literary sketches of James McCune Smith, a Black abolitionist writer and surgeon. ![]()

![]() Becoming well known in his native country, he joined the Stern magazine family along with photography legends Helmut Newton, Guy Bourdin and Hans Feurer, and moved to Paris in 1978 to further his career.Ĭonsidered a pioneer in photography, he introduced a form of new realism by redefining the standards of beauty with timeless images. Influenced by Joseph Kosuth and the Conceptual movement, he was invited before graduating to present his work at the renowned avant-garde Galerie Denise Ren - Hans Mayer in 1969.Īfter moving to Düsseldorf in 1971, he turned his attention to photography and worked for two years assisting German photographer Hans Lux, before opening his own studio in 1973. ![]() ![]() He later studied free painting at the College of Art in Krefeld. Inspired by the work of Van Gogh, he moved to Arles for almost a year, and then embarked on a journey hitchhiking through Spain and North Africa. It is mysterious, darkly erotic, intense, thrilling and all these secrets and twist n turns have me on the edge of my seat. I am going to say this even before I get to book 3 which is the conclusion to this trilogy, but I think this is one of the best dark romance storylines, character built, plot I have ever read/listened to. the rollercoaster of mind-games continues….I knew I would have another cliffy hanging over my head but still couldn’t resist diving into Book 2 of the Deception series.
